Dotterel on Two Lads Hill, Horwich, 5 May 1996

The Dotterel is a very rare visitor to England's high moorland. It is a wader with some odd characteristics: females outshine the males, and the birds appear tame, walking towards you if you stay still.

Winter weather in Horwich, Christmas 2001

Horwich, where I live, is a small town near to Manchester and nearer to Bolton.  It's bounded to the north-west by lovely moorland areas and a string of scenic reservoirs.

Solid fuel rocket launch, 4 January 2003

Sadly, this splendid rocket never flew again: a sudden wind change caused it to crash into the highest branches of a very tall Beech on its descent, complete with its payload: a nose-cone camera with film of the trip, never to be seen.
